This is Medinilla speciosa, also known as Showy Asian Grapes. This is a tropical epiphyte shrub with woody branched stems. An epiphyte grows on another tree for support but does not draw any nutrition from the tree like a parasite would. A epiphyte can live off of nutrients that it takes directly from the air and rain. Many epiphytes are house plants because of their minimal requirements for soil and water. This plant only requires light shade and it cannot be outdoors during the Winter in most places and that is why it makes a spectacular house plant. Happy inside and not requiring direct sunlight make this a real show stopper in the house. In some areas this plant is considered a protected species. USDA Hardiness Zones 10 to 11
