This is Hibiscus dasycalyx, also known as Neches River Rosemallow. In several areas this is considered a protected species and can not just be dug up and thrown away. Hibiscus dasycalyx is a candidate for Federal protection. It can get up to 4 feet tall and blooms from the middle of the Summer until the middle of the Fall. This plant likes to live in sun or partial shade and has a very attractive white blossom with a velvety purple center. This plant does well in normal soil and it can also withstand wet swampy conditions. Hibiscus plants in general are a nectar source for the Cloudless Sulphur, Orbed Sulphur, Disguised Scrub-Hairstreak, Yojoa Scrub-Hairstreak, Dukes Skipper, Large Orange Sulphur, White Angled-Sulphur, Yellow Angled-Sulphur, and Monk butterflies, and larval hosts for the Bumelia Webworm and Pearly Wood-nymph moths, and the Cloudless Sulphur butterfly.
