These seeds are from Castilleja exserta, also known as Exserted Indian Paintbrush, Owls Clover, and Purple Owls Clover. This annual herb likes to live in full sun where it grows about a foot high and sports its magenta, purple, lavender, and pink blossoms in the middle of the spring. Castilleja in general are larval hosts for the Ediths Checkerspot, Theona Checkerspot, Leanira Checkerspot, Black Checkerspot, and Bay checkerspot butterflies. This annual plant grows in all USDA Hardiness Zones.
