This is Aristolochia californica, also known as California Pipevine, and California Dutchmans pipe. This perennial climber attracts many different kinds of birds, bees, and butterflies. This plant likes to live in at least some light shade but it can also handle a spot that gets full shade. This early bloomer blossoms in late Winter and early Spring. All Aristolochia species, except for the Aristolochia gigantea, are larval host plants for the Pipevine Swallowtail, Polydamas Swallowtail, and Mylotes Cattleheart butterflies.
