This is Viola tricolor, also known as johnny jump up, heartsease, hearts ease, hearts delight, tickle-my-fancy, Jack-jump-up-and-kiss-me, come-and-cuddle-me, three faces in a hood, wild pansy, and love-in-idleness. This adorable little pansy does not mind if it lives in full sun or full shade, and it will adapt to most all growing conditions. This cute little survivor is the larval host plant for the Variegated Fritillary, Great Spangled Fritillary, and Gray Hairstreak butterflies. Johnny jump up is a nectar plant for the Falcate Orangetip butterfly. The petals of this plant are edible and used in salads or desserts most of the time. The petals are picked just as the flower opens up and then they are soaked in cold water until they swell up. Not only are the flowers edible but they contain antioxidants. This plant is grown as an annual in some places and it is a short lived perennial in USDA Hardiness Zones 2b to 9
