This is Monarda punctata, also known as dotted Horsemint, and Spotted Bee Balm. This is so beneficial to bees and butterflies. The beautiful and complex blossom bursts with an array of colors and spots on a dense spiked flower on the end of a 2 to 3 foot stem. This striking blossom sports several shades of White, Pink, Yellow, Green, and Purple. Monarda plants, in general, are larval host plants for the Pyrausta inveterascalis, Orange Mint, and Hermit sphinx moths. They are also a nectar source for the Dull Firetip, Pine White, Diana Fritillary and Cassus Roadside-Skipper butterflies and the Bedstraw hawkmoth. The leaves can be eaten raw or cooked. They have a strong aromatic taste, and are used in salads and cooked foods. You can also use this plant to make an aromatic tea. USDA Hardiness Zones 5 to 10.
