This is Berberis darwinii, also known as Darwin Barberry, michay, calafate, quelung, and Darwins Berberis. During the voyage of the beagle Charles Darwin himself discovered this plant in South America. This shrub grows to about 4 feet tall and produces small dark fruit. This fruit juice is acidic and works well as a substitution for lemon juice. I'm going to call this one Darwinaid. If you let the fruit fully ripen it loses its acidity and is very delicious. This is a good fruit to use raw, or cooked in a porridge. Not only is this shrub used for its fruit. It is also used, for its beauty, as a formal hedge. This plant likes to live in full sun to partial shade where it attracts birds, bees, and butterflies. USDA Hardiness Zones 7 to 9
